As-Built Survey
An as-built survey, also known as a “record of survey” or “as-constructed survey,” is a type of land survey that is performed after a building or other structure has been constructed. The purpose of an as-built survey is to document the exact location, size, and orientation of the structure as it exists on the ground, and property lines that may have been affected by the construction.
In New York, As-Built Surveys are required by the NY State Department of State (NYSDOS) when a building or structure is constructed, altered, or demolished, and its location is to be recorded on a land survey map or plot plan. This same requirement is enforced by Local building departments in your local town or village as well as the New York City Department of Buildings.
As-built surveys are often performed by professional land surveyors, by taking precise measurements of the structure and its surrounding area. The data collected during an as-built survey is then used to create a detailed map or plan of the area that can be used by architects, engineers, and other professionals as a reference for future work on the site.
